Hi DJ,
Enjoy your trip.
I've been to both locations, though to neither recently.
Let's see... In upstate NY, I've been to Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, Albany, and numerous smaller cities and towns. The Fingerlakes region is extremely nice to visit.
I spent about 6 months in San Antonio when I was in the military at Fort Sam Houston. I have very nice memories of the city, and how clean it was (at that time) for a major city, no dirt and years of grime as was commonly found in cities along the eastern shores of the USA.
The Alamo was a disappointment for me, alas. While growing up, I was enthralled by the Walt Disney version of the Alamo, via Disney's Davey Crockett series. Unfortunately, the real thing couldn't live up the the hype and magic of Hollywood. There wasn't any Fess Parker (who portrayed Davey Crockett) nor even a Georgie Russell (portrayed by Buddy Ebsen, who recently passed away). No Mike Finks (a prominent recurring character in the series) nor any Mexican soldiers. At the time, the Alamo was found in the middle of a San Antonio business district, with a tortilla factory located directly across the street. While it's been many years since I've been there, and I'm sure that San Antonio has "beautified" the area by now, at the time I visited, it was disappointing. Rain and years have eroded away the walls surrounding the shrine, so what Disney portrayed as 10, 15 or even 20 foot walls now are barely 1 to 2 feet in height. Ah well... So much for childhood memories...
