<those who championed the communist victory>

Are you trying to say that Steven is a closet Communist? So you truly believe that everyone who was against the Vietnam War was pro-Communist?

There was a time, in the U.S., when the Left was largely sympathetic to communism. But that sympathy began fading with the Stalinist excesses of the 1930s, and it was almost gone, by the 1950s. Today, it is gone, totally. Oh, I suppose you can dredge up a few miniscule remnants, but that's all.

The Left, today, is almost wholly anti-authoritarian. It is firmly opposed to American imperialism (as they see it), and equally opposed to communism, fascism, and islamism. If you want to know what the Left thinks today, go read the 10 Principles of the Green Party. There is nothing there even remotely communist (except for those who insist on seeing it, because they Believe it MustBeThere).

The point Steven was making, was the same one I made about Cuba. In both cases, the Communists came to power, largely because they championed the nationalist cause. If the U.S. had helped the nationalists, instead of violently opposing them, there is a chance those nations would have non-Communist governments today. We lost, because we opposed nationalism, and that is an irresistable force in global politics.

And, today, if we let the Islamists be the champions of Iraqi nationalism, then our defeat is certain.
