You missed the point. Of course others have had preemptive wars over history. These have all been wars of aggression. The US has never engaged in a war of aggression.

Also, this is the first time such a preemptive war has been considered a "war of defense" by the US.

This is the entire reason the "16 words" are being hotly responded to by the Bush administration.

* If there was no actual immediate threat that required military invasion then it means that the "Bush Doctrine" is a fraud.

* If the reasons claimed by the Bush administration don't stand scrutiny, then the campaign is one of aggression.

* If there is profit involved by Carlyle or the Saudis, then the campaign is one of profiteering.

You might agree with such a war of aggression or for profit, but that has never been a general American ideal.

If Americans decide that this has been such a war, it would be very dangerous for Bush & Co. They would be thrown out on their ear in a group.
