There's no doubt that China has the fastest growing economy in the world. And the simplest, and to my mind, the best explanation is the Chinese culture, i.e. for the sake of the family study hard, work hard, save, save, save. "Those who suffer most become great." The slogan Socialism with Chinese Characteristics sounds to me like a cover up for retreating from doctrinaire socialism. As that it is of course useful. But "Whatever works best, amplify it, whatever doesn't get rid of it" could be used in any context by anybody. Li Peng doubtless would say that massacring 7000 of the cream of the young generation "works" very well.
