Yes, we are, but we should bear in mind certain constants, like the fact that respect is not a two-way street for the Arabs. The Koran teaches them that Islam alone deserves respect. We have to respect them, because it's good policy. We have to remember that we're only getting respect because of our guns.

If we work really hard to rebuild their infrastructure and set up an Iraqi government, we may get some fleeting gratitude. But it won't last longer than five minutes. Why should it? To be honest, we overthrew Saddam for our own interests, and everybody knows it, even if a side-benefit is greatly improved lives for the Iraqis.
