LONDON -- The battle between the BBC and the British government is heating up.

The head of the broadcaster's board of governors says the government tried to pressure the BBC to change the tone of its war and post-war coverage.

The government denies the accusation made by Gavyn Davies in a British newspaper, The Daily Telegraph.

The government and the broadcaster have been battling over a BBC story that quoted an unidentified official as saying Britain exaggerated its intelligence on Iraqi weapons. The broadcaster revealed the source was government adviser David Kelly -- after he committed suicide.

Davies says the government threatened to cut the BBC's funding and rewrite its charter.

The government is conducting a long-planned review of the BBC -- and the official in charge says the dispute won't play factor in any decisions she makes.
