Frankly, I wish we had a real fiscal conservative to run against Bush.
Ann Coulter was making a speech today on C-SPAN, and addressed this point somewhat. And I think she is right. You can't expect Bush (or any president) to "do it all". A good president can handle a few major issues during a term. Bush is doing the War on Terrorism, Taxes, and the Judiciary. It is a little much to ask him to to deal with the crappy legislation (like the farm bill, education bill, and now this prescription drug fiasco) as well. Other conservatives ought to be handling that.
Bush is a great leader, and that will be his legacy. But he has caved on some fiscal issues that he shouldn't have.
But it is better than trying to attack every issue that comes down the pike, and ending up being no good at any of them (like the previous occupant of the WH did). When they try to do too much, they end up not being good at any of it. So it is important for a president to pick what's important and go with it.
Besides, no fiscal issues matter. If the Dems won't let you fix Social Security (which Bush TRIED to make his issue with the only conceivable fix, privatization, and was shot down by the Dems), it hardly matters what else you do fiscally, as it all pales by comparison to the liberal train wreck called Social Security. |
