Re. Malaysia

Not sure the Arabs are paying attention. Not sure they will, unless the Example is Arabic and close (i.e. not sure they would "pay attention" to say a Moroccan Example). The resistance to change is so profound, that any Example needs to be near impossible to ignore. Sorta "up close and personal"

Your comments about how difficult it is to get the Muslim mind to accept even the basic ideas about a modern state (like the separation of mosque and state) are important. As I've said earlier, the required change is on the scale of the Christian Reformation. Why try this difficult task in the Middle East? Because that's where the problem is. Change elsewhere is unlikely to have the desired effect. Don't mean to imply it will be easy. May not be possible. OTOH, instead of using MIC (Military Industrial Complex) toys to solve the problem, I'd be hiring a lot of comparative religion scholars in an effort to find out what's possible.

Your idea of approaching this piecemeal over the entire Muslim world is a good one. I'm just not sure it will produce results soon enough. OTOH, there's nothing in that approach that is intrinsically incompatible with a more aggressive approach in the Arabic heartland. With thought, the two could dovetail nicely.
