WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - Orders for durable goods rose at a faster than expected rate of 2.1 percent in June, the Commerce Department said Friday. Economists had predicted new orders would rise 1.3 percent in the month. The gain was the largest increase since January. Orders for non-defense capital goods, a closely watched gauge on the economy, rose 2.0 percent in the month after rising 0.2 percent in May. Excluding aircraft, non-defense capital goods rose 0.6 percent in June after rising 0.5 percent in the prior month. Overall goods orders, excluding the transportation sector, rose 1.4 percent in June after rising 0.9 percent in the month. Overall goods orders, excluding the defense sector, rose 1.7 percent in the month after rising 1.2 percent in May.
