trend-spotting

Search engine sites that rank searches by popularity:

Google Zeitgeist - google.com
JeevesIQ - jeevesiq.com
Yahoo! Buzz Index - buzz.yahoo.com
Lycos 50 with Aaron Schatz - 50.lycos.com

This was the subject of today's PORTALS column by Lee Gomes, on page B1 of the Wall Street Journal. He calls this another example of Web-enabled disintermediation; bad news for professional trend-spotters. Gomes himself still prefers a bit of expert commentary with his trends: he picks Lycos 50 as best, because it has Schatz to provide "insightful trend background."

Since it's occasionally possible to invest with or against a popular trend, I wondered if this could be a useful tool. However, after scanning the lists, I'd say it's about equivalent to reading The National Enquirer. Otoh, Victor Niederhoffer claims that's the only newspaper he reads for investment ideas. <g>
