That's what I figure too.

As far as something happening, there are plenty of brutal dictators who have died of old age (Mao, Stalin, Ho Chi Minh, looking ahead - Castro) and even some who have handed over power successfully to the next generation - like Kim Jong-Il for example.

The extent to which Iraq was "a US ally" is greatly exaggerated. Iraq's was armed and it's military trained by Russia, France, and China, who have been it's most important allies for decades. The most militarily significant thing we gave Saddam during the I-I war was intelligence, I believe. You know perfectly that at that time Iran seemed like the greater danger and that otherwise we wouldn't have had that little to do with him.
