The problem we have, though many won't see it yet, is that our tactical options are so limited. I remember talking about this a long time ago: we can't rely on the police, we have no investigative capacity, no reliable immigration service. I'm sure we have scads of informants, but no way of knowing who's fingering a bad guy and who's fingering his personal enemy.

The most effective tactics against terrorists are the most precise. Large scale tactics are all we have available, and those are the easiest for the terrorists to work against. They are also the ones most likely to raise anti-American sentiment.

We are using the military in a role for which it is not trained and is not appropriate. Unfortunately, it's the only tool we've got at the moment.

It sucks.

IMO, of course.
