The problem with hydrogen is that more greenhouse gases would be used to create it than environmentalists have readily admitted. There is alot of work left to be done.

I am a fan of more efficient engines and micro power. Stirling engines are the most overlooked (and the most efficient) engines on earth. Each home, with a Stirling engine engaged in cogeneration, could conceivably use less energy to provide its own power, and also return power to the grid for commercial use.
I've looked into the costs and right now the capital costs are far too high to make it doable. But the way to offset this is to create a test enviroment of new homes that are all micropowered, which would help to "feed the need".

The nice thing about Stirling engines is that they work very nicely with solar power, and potentially wind. I'm not a fan of solar due to the vagaries of weather, though they are getting better at working in cloud cover. You still have trees (like those around my house) to deal with, though.
