ADB sees stronger Asia growth

SINGAPORE - The Asian Development Bank on Tuesday tempered optimism about a near-term pick-up in growth with a warning that Asia still faces many risks, not least because the scars of the 1997 financial crisis are yet to heal.

The ADB said in a report that the end of the flu-like SARS outbreak, tentative signs of improving global demand and the swift conclusion to the Iraq war, which has helped keep a lid on oil prices, all boded well for East Asia.

"Developments in the last few weeks give room for optimism for a pick-up in East Asia's growth in the second half of this year and a further strengthening next year," said Yoshihiro Iwasaki, head of the ADB's Regional Economic Monitoring Unit.
