Microcom Cuts Prices on All Standalone Modems by 40%

Market Demand for Modems Continues to Expand
NORWOOD, Mass., Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Microcom (Nasdaq: MNPI), a wholly
owned subsidiary of Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE: CPQ), today announced a
significant price reduction for its family of Microcom standalone modem
products. Effective immediately, standalone modem prices have been cut by an
average of 40 percent in the U.S. and Canada.
"We are seeing the market for modems growing at a tremendous pace as a
result of the growth of the Internet, telecommuting and portable computing,"
said Kevin Gagnon, senior marketing manager, Microcom's Modulation Business
Unit. "Microcom is well positioned to benefit from this market growth by
continuing to offer a superior product for both end-users and corporations at
a new lower price point."

volume cost reductions in manufacturing and increased channel distribution,"
said Gagnon. "Both of these factors allow Microcom to lower its price while

Pricing and Distribution
The street price for the Microcom standalone modems is expected to range
between $60 and $250. The DeskPorte(TM) S 33.6 modem, for example, is
