Semiconductor Industry on 'Hair-Trigger for Recovery'

By David Manners -- Electronics Weekly, 7/30/2003

Semiconductor unit consumption increased 13 percent in Q2, leading to a forecast for a return to solid growth trends over the next two and a half years at Future Horizons’ IFS2003 mid-term semiconductor industry seminar in London Tuesday.

“It’s real, high quality growth -- real unit consumption is going up,” said Future Horizons’ chairman, Malcolm Penn. “The industry is on a hair-trigger for recovery.”

The trigger is the supply demand balance, which will see prices stabilize or rise. That should happen in the current quarter, Penn said. “No one is investing anything in capacity at the moment -- which is good news,” he noted.

Accordingly Future Horizons is predicting a 13 percent industry growth with a best-case qualification that it could be 18 percent if prices stiffen significantly.

A downside to the recovery is that European semiconductor consumption is not increasing, Penn said, owing to the “lack of manufacturing competitiveness of Europe’s OEMs.”
