NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Shares of ChipPac Inc. (CHPC) fell 16% Tuesday after a Lehman Brothers Inc. analyst downgraded the stock because of fierce competition in ChipPac's market.

Shares of the company, which makes packaging for semiconductors, were recently down $1.21 to $6.16 on volume of 9.3 million. Average daily volume is 1.8 million.

Lehman's Ted Parmigiani, who downgraded ChipPac's stock to equal weight from overweight, cited concerns that "competitive pressures resulting in market share losses and/or greater than average price declines - not general business trends - will prevent sustainable profitability until the middle of [the 2004 calendar year]."

Parmigiani said ChipPac competitors ASE Test Ltd. (ASTSF) and Amkor Technologies Inc. (AMKR) present the greatest threat to ChipPac.

"We have learned that as of late June, both ASE and Amkor began active and targeted price-slashing campaigns to shared (dual-sourced) customers of CHPC in an effort to boost capacity utilization and market share," Parmigiani said.
