However this comes out, we've lost an important point. North Korea is now a nuclear power, and will remain one. If they have bombs, they are not going to give them up, no matter what happens at the negotiations

...or what happened at the last negotiations either, come to that. Hard to see how we could have prevented it when China doesn't seem to mind. North Korea is clearly China's "unruly child"; if the situation really becomes untenable for us, the way to prod China is to threaten to arm Japan and South Korea with nukes in response.
