First of all this Pope wasn't pope when those things happened. Also the church has talked all along about how marriage is sacred. I'm sure some of the opponents of gay marriage, both within and outside of the Roman Catholic church are bigoted but the church has real and consistent religious and traditional reasons to be against gay marriage.
