FEATURES: GSMA ready to fight for China
Shanghai. (Interfax-China) - Robert G. Conway, CEO of the GSM Association (GSMA), stressed to Interfax during an exclusive interview the monumental position China is presently in as the country's two mobile carriers, China Mobile and China Unicom, consider which 3G standard to adopt for their third generation networks. GSMA is the global trade organization that exists to promote, preserve, and enhance the interests of GSM operators around the world. This trip is Conway's first through China's media and publicity apparatus.
According to statistics cited by GSMA, China Mobile is currently the largest mobile operator in the world, with 153.1 mln GSM users. China Unicom is the world's second largest mobile operator, with 82 mln total users, of which 71.8 mln are GSM users. For a sense of scale, China Unicom has more GSM customers than the customer bases of the world's three largest CDMA operators (Verizon, SKT, Sprint) combined. China is not only the largest mobile services market in the world, but as Interfax previously reported, has recently also become the worlds largest manufacturer of cellular phones. What China has not done, however, is to choose a 3G standard for its next generation network. It would be hard to overstate how important China is for GSMA.
