Regarding US boycott of Canadian beef. Canadian ranchers buy calves from US to raise and graze them in Canada. There is more open grazing land in Canada and cost of grazing is less than in US.

In 2002, US exports 241 Miilion of beef to Canada and that's calves, not the cattle carcass (meat). Calves (300 to 450 lbs) go for 60 to 65 cents a pound and are grazed to 3 to 4 times the calves' weight. Grown cattle (1,400 to 1,500 lbs live weight) sells for 45 to 50 cents a pound, usually sold to feedlots where cattle would get fattened some more, before going to the slaughter house.

The Canadian mad cow disease was from an imported US calf. No other cattle was found with the disease. Nevertheless, Canadian cattle is not allowed to enter US after Canadian no-support of US action in Iraq. Many ranchers had to kill and bury a percentage of their cattle because the old reliable cross-the-border trade and way of making a living has been cut off.

Just to show how vindictive politics can be, and the small guys get hurt.
