Ray,
<<<Isn't it strange that in the end we are finding the Iraqis to be honest>>>
Yeah, and there have been a lot of accusations for the fall back position of "liberating" Iraqis from the "cruel regime". If Saddam is such an evil fellow, why did he plaster the countryside with pictures of his best happy face? It seems to me a "cruel dictator" would lean toward a more sober phiz, rather than an Iraqi version of Santa. I also take the rape accusations against his sons with a grain of salt. Would the sons of the richest and most powerful man in a country need to resort to rape in order to find female companionship? It seems unlikely. I don't know of any culture where there aren't a long line of willing women available to men in positions of power and wealth, even if the men look like frogs, smell like goats and are covered with rank hair. Plus, I doubt the women of Iraq are safer with 150,000 GIs, who haven't been with a woman since December, wandering around.
"He murdered his own people" was always a favorite of the Bush Cartel, but the references (if they were mentioned at all) seemed to be related to Kurdish uprisings or attempted coups. It's hard to tell from the scanty information available, but the situations surrounding the most negative spin appear to be more ones of necessity forced on Hussein to restore order than anything else. I also suspect there was a fair amount of rabble rousing on the part of the CIA which instigated some of those uprisings in the first place.
In any case, seeing both sides of the accusations I think would be worthwhile. |
