But lay the church aside.

Glad you said that. I really don't care what rules that or any other religious institution makes regarding whose marriage it will sanctify. My only concern is for civil marriages.

The problem with homosexual marriage is that, by putting homosexual unions on the same footing as traditional marriage, it goes too far in normalizing homosexuality, further eroding our ability to make moral judgments about sexual behavior.

Sure does. And that's a bad thing? Not in my book. Sex is a private, intimate activity. None of the state's business.

do we really want people legitimizing their promiscuity or pedophilia by referring to the innateness of their desire, on the analogy of homosexuals pleading that they cannot help themselves?

Whoa. Who is legitimizing promiscuity and pedophilia? Promiscuous homosexuals don't want to get married, nor do pedophiles. It's the nice, suburban types who want to get married.

That accepting the innateness of homosexuality somehow legitimizes the pursuit of other innate behaviors like pedophilia or wife beating or overeating is an overreach. Big time. We accept the innateness of alcoholism without legitimizing drunken driving, let alone pedophilia.

EDIT: I don't want to give the impression that I'm any big champion of homosexual unions. I think it's more than a little silly. I just can't think of a good enough reason to deny marriage to those who want it. Plus I'm pretty annoyed with the approach of some of the opposition, much more than I'm annoyed with the proponents.
