hese political marriages: AKA royal marriages?

Royal, also lesser nobility or even wealthy powerful familes with out titles.

Aren't heirs, particularly male heirs, a major goal there?

Yes but in many cases there wasn't much of a real family or any commitment (at least on the man's part) to being faithful. Both parites likely didn't pick each other and often didn't care for each other. Its not even like an arranged marrage where the parents pick someone they think will be good for their child, its all about the political connection or money involved. They try to make sure there is "an heir and a spare", neither of which might spend any signifgant time with their parents or the parents with each other. It might not have been a total sham, they did want kids and the marriage was serious in some ways but it would be as much of a sham as some of the other marriages people are calling shams.
