We had slaves in the US too- we've already ratified that in the US.

But you don't need to have a gay lover if you don't want to. You can marry a woman and live with her if you choose. But what business is it of yours if the state allows someone else to live differently? What right do you have to use the machinery of the state against someone who wants to marry a person of the same sex? Other than custom- which obviously supports evil just as well as good, and the yuck factor (which certainly shouldn't be put into law), or a religious fastidiousness (again, not something that should be thrown into the cogs of the machinery of a secular state)- what possible interest could you have?
