On the news last night Ma. will be firing a great deal of tenure teachers. some with 15 or 20 years... These are teachers who cannot pass an English verbal test.... The teachers have been teaching language of their origin for years in the public schools and are now required to able to pass this English verbal test or lose their jobs... Teachers are saying it is a way of cutting back on teachers before they get their pension.... Seems to me we should have made sure they could speak English enough to pass a verbal test a long time ago... Is this another example of hiring those to teach in the childs language vs having them learn English like the old days ? I wonder if any statistics on these programs. Isn't Ca. dropping all non-English speaking classes?
