I think I am getting a bit confused on terminology. What is the difference between marriage and a civil union? What is left out (excluding religion, of course)? What is it that is being protected? And why? I am a traditionalist at heart, but I really don't see a problem with marriage between same sex couples. The failing values that I think threaten marriage and the family aren't ones I can lay at the feet of the gay community. A lack of responsibility and commitment to your spouse and your children, a belief that ME and my fulfillment comes first, has nothing to do with sexual preference.

Sort of OT: In the 19th century, women living together were referred to as being in a Boston Marriage. David Mamet has a play out on the topic, but I haven't seen it. There is debate over whether the partnerships were sexual or not. It was a way for women to escape the male-dominated relationship of the times and achieve some independence--the alternative being a walk into the ocean like poor Edna in The Awakening, I guess.
