"It feels just as unfair either way." It appears that you are basing your complaint on an absolute principle "fairness". Of course couples have their view point on what would be fair given their circumstances as well. In order for one view point to consider with respect the view point of the other, there has to be some internal conscience regarding the bigger picture (both view points). When persons of principle have no conscience regarding the situations of others, oppression is the rule of the day...would you agree that principle minus conscience equals extremism?
