You minimize the extent of the dislocation. Messy is a bit euphemistic. The Mukhabarat probably didn't drag away the numbers of people who are being victimized by thugs. The Arab press on this is even more strident than the American articles- and while I once thought the Arab press was overstating things, I'm not so sure anymore.

I'm not sure Iraq is a picnic compared to post WWII Europe- and I'm not sure why it's relevant either. I knew someone who lived in Germany during and after the war. I will ask her about lawlessness, but I don't think that was a problem. That may be a throw away line that is simply incorrect. Anyway, I would want facts to back up such an assertion.
