I do not think that we have ever taken our eyes off al- Qaida, these have been separate operations. I do think that we have permitted sanctuary across the border, however, and that is a problem. I understand that the politics of cross- border raids are tricky, but we will probably have to bite that bullet eventually.

I think we will work out some degree of burden sharing in Iraq, but I do not mind being cautious at the moment. I would ensure US control at least until after elections, for example. Our allies are, in fact, pretty active in Afghanistan already, as well as in international police efforts.

I think the economy is picking up, so I am not too worried on that score. Still, you are right, the vulnerability is implicitly there.

I am not sure who will emerge for the Democrats, but it is less theirs to win as Bush's to lose.........
