The system is broken. No one anticipated a vain multimillionaire would pay signature gatherers $1 per to create a bogus indication of "public sentiment".

The polls that I have seen have indicated that a majority of the California populace are in support of the recall effort. Having said that, I am in agreement with you that the recall mechanism needs some fine tuning.

Why Davis would want his name on the ballot is beyond my comprehension. Even if he won the election, he would be so discredited that it is hard to imagine him having any ability to effectively govern the state. I was about to say that whoever wins is going to have a hard time governing, but I suspect that the people of California will be so tired of the circus by October that the new Governor (assuming that there is a new Governor) will have a grace period. Of course, if the Governor is a Republican he or she still has to deal with a Democratic legislature.

I suspect that a lot of states are looking at their recall provisions with the thought of tightening them up.
