"If marriage is to have legal recognition and benefits as well as broad based societal acceptance then we need to define what marriage is. That definition would be the rule."

There are (or were) rules. The rules have been whittled away. For example, the rules of marriage, by definition, once precluded the practice of adultery. Now we don't even notice. Kobe Bryant may or may not have sexually assaulted a woman in Eagle County Colorado. He definitely commited adultery. The adultery is of no interest in modern times. Rules of marriage are non-existant, except in the legal sense: taxes, inheritance, etc. Karen is right. Modern marriage is a sham.

I have been predicting, since the late 80's, that a new puritanical era was coming. I was way off but we are a more conservative society. I thought that with HIV and the social ills related to single parenting, the generation of young adults in the 90s would be extreme straights. They weren't. Maybe the coming generation will be, then their grand kids can rebel against it.
