Wire News of new RSYS contract:
Planar "Clean Screen" Hospital Workstation Uses RadiSys Custom Pentium Processor-Based Computer

HILLSBORO, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 6, 1997--RadiSys Corporation is providing custom Pentium processor-based embedded computers for the new Clean Screen(tm) workstation announced last month by Planar Systems of Portland, Oregon. The Clean Screen is a compact PC workstation that incorporates a full multimedia Pentium processor-based PC and color display in a low profile, sealed plastic case that measures approximately 16 x 13 inches and is less than 4 inches deep. RadiSys designed and manufactures Planar's custom computer using the new RadiSys EPM(tm)-1 embedded processor module and interchangeable custom flat panel video boards. "The Clean Screen project with Planar is a prime example of RadiSys' successful `virtual division' philosophy," said Charlie Crawford, director of marketing for RadiSys Integrated Products Division. "Working closely with Planar, RadiSys delivered a custom embedded PC-compatible computer specific to Planar's needs, while Planar focused on the industry-specific requirements that form its core competency." "Planar designed the Clean Screen workstation specifically to meet the operational needs of hospital caregivers," said Stacey Ewton, Planar's Director of Systems Marketing and Sales. "By working with RadiSys, we effectively combined Planar's expertise in the healthcare market with RadiSys' expertise in embedded computing to create a solution that is beneficial to hospitals as well as to patients. We expect the Clean Screen product family to enjoy long-running success due to RadiSys' modular design that we can easily upgrade for future software or display resolution needs." RadiSys and Planar engineers worked closely together in teams that included mechanical and design engineers to develop this new product for manufacturability and reliability. The computer was designed so that other circuit boards used for specific point-of-care applications - such as voice recognition for dictation, or bar code scanning for patient record keeping - can be easily incorporated. The modular design allows RadiSys to easily manufacture a variety of configurations based on Planar's orders; the computer and case are constant, while a change in Pentium processor speed or type of flat panel display requires only the choice of interchangeable boards also designed and manufactured by RadiSys. Cabling between the boards was minimized and stabilized with the case, dramatically reducing the likelihood of manufacturing errors or reliability problems attributable to loose or damaged cables. The Clean Screen workstation can be mounted on a wall or rolling stand for use in patient rooms, surgical suites, intensive care units, emergency rooms, and nursing stations. Because it is used in work spaces that are typically crowded and that must be kept clean and free of clutter, the Clean Screen workstation is housed in a waterproof, rugged plastic case made of the same durable plastic used to make football helmets. Stacey Ewton of Planar also noted that, while the Clean Screen was designed specifically to meet the needs of hospital information systems, the product is drawing substantial interest in other industries. "Industries such as semiconductor manufacturing are showing immediate interest in the Clean Screen workstation, as they have similar requirements as hospitals for an integrated, rugged, high-performance PC, that takes up very little space, and is sealed for easy cleaning and to limit contaminants."
