IsoTis shares jump as GenSci merger clears hurdle
Tuesday August 5, 8:38 am ET

AMSTERDAM, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Shares in Dutch-Swiss biotech firm IsoTis SA (Amsterdam:ISON.AS - News; Zurich:ISOTn.S - News) jumped almost 14 percent on Tuesday after a U.S. court ruling brought a merger with Canada's GenSci Regeneration Sciences Inc (Toronto:GNS.TO - News) one step closer.

Earlier on Tuesday the firms said a U.S. bankruptcy court had freed GenSci from Chapter 11. GenSci had requested a dismissal order from the court in California to complete a planned merger of its subsidiary GenSci OrthoBiologics Inc with IsoTis.

"The shares are benefiting from news of the ruling and hopes for a bright future for IsoTis," a trader at Van der Hoop Effectenbank said in Amsterdam.

"IsoTis' sales have been gradually rising and investors are expecting there will be a lot of demand for its synthetic bone substitute against the backdrop of an ageing population."

By 1218 GMT IsoTis shares were up 13.64 percent at 1.5 euros, giving the small cap company a market capitalisation of 62 million euros.

The subsidiary will remain under Chapter 11 protection until a confirmation hearing expected to be held in October, the firms said in a statement. They expect the merger to be completed by October.

IsoTis and GenSci will each publish half-year 2003 results simultaneously with the publication of an information circular and prospectus no later than early September. IsoTis was initially due to report second-quarter results on August 11.
