Siemens Invests $30M In Shanghai Despite 3G Doubts
By J.R. Wu

Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

SHANGHAI (Dow Jones)--Germany's Siemens AG (SI) is to invest $30 million to expand its Siemens Shanghai Mobile Communications Ltd. plant, despite continued uncertainty about the timetable for China's rollout of 3G technology.

The expanded Shanghai plant will become the German firm's second production site for third generation mobile technology, company executives said Wednesday.

Base stations supporting wide code division multiple access, or WCDMA, technology, will be produced at the enlarged plant, they said. Currently, base stations for WCDMA networks are exclusively made in Germany.

Despite their increased investment in the Shanghai plant, Siemens executives remained uncertain about the timing for China's allocation of its first 3G licenses.
