Beijing, Aug. 6: As host of the 2008 Olympics, Beijing plans to splash out 230 billion yuan (27.7 billion dollars) to build top to bottom infrastructure in the Chinese capital, the State press reported today.

The massive spending on sports facilities, roads, subways and even a second airport is necessary to adequately host the global sporting event, said Sun Kanglin, Director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sport.

Eighteen sports facilities alone are being built in the Chinese capital for the Games at a cost of more than three billion dollars.

Among roads and new metro stations, a new airport is also expected to be completed before 2008, along with a new runway and terminal at the existing airport which is due to open in 2007.

Just how Beijing plans to foot the astronomical cost of holding the world's most prestigious sporting event remains unclear, although officials said financing would come from a mixture of Government and private sector spending.
