sickle cell is very adaptive

color blindness probably has its uses too- but there is LOTS or writing on the boon of the sickle cell in the tropics. Read some of the literature. It is a fascinating example of how something you might think of as maladaptive (if you didn't know better), is actually extremely beneficial.
