D-I-Y 4 CA?

"Despite itself, this recall election offers us, the people of California, a historic opportunity to right many wrongs -- a chance to open the doors, to clean out the backrooms, and make our choices reflect our values." -- Arianna Huffinton

Why is Arianna running?

The System is Broken. It's Time to Fix it.

My name is Arianna Huffington. I am a syndicated columnist. I am also a mother. And, as California’s crisis continues to grow, I am deeply concerned about the state where I am raising my children.

Now, I have decided to run for governor of California.

Here’s why:

1. To break the hold that big-money interests have on Sacramento.

Big-money interests have much too much influence in Sacramento. Politicians have turned the state house into a huge vending machine, where lobbyists put in their money, and get out the policies for which they pay.

It's the reason we're so deeply in debt. The reason corporate fat cats get away with not paying their fair share of taxes. The reason we have crumbling schools and gleaming jails. The reason our natural resources are for sale to the highest bidder.

I'm running because the time has come to take back our government, and ensure that it works for all Californians -- not just those who can afford to buy their own personal politician. This is not a question of right or left; it's a question of right or wrong.

2. To give the voters of California an independent, progressive alternative to the miserable status quo.

California is in deep, deep trouble -- both financially and politically -- and its citizens deserve better than the partisan, petty and pallid leadership being offered by either Gray Davis or the Republican lynch mob that is trying to replace him.

3. Because the only way things will change is if We the People become outraged. And mobilized.
Only the energy, talent and determination of everyday people can lift California out of this political swamp.

I intend to use this campaign to build the kind of popular movement that can remake our democracy – and that will transcend my candidacy. I've seen too many promising progressive waves break on the beach and not amount to anything. But a campaign that is able to energize the people creates the possibility of a real tidal wave of change. I hope that my candidacy can galvanize such a campaign.

4. To make it clear that the George Bush’s reckless policies are the main cause of California’s current crisis.

The main reason that California is in such a sorry state right now is the reckless policies of the Bush administration.

As ineffectual as Gray Davis has been at addressing the present crisis, there can be no doubt that it is the Bush administration, with its tax cuts for the wealthy, its perverted economic priorities, and its cozy relationship with crooked energy companies like Enron, that has led California to the brink of financial disaster.

Which is why it is not just politically imperative but morally imperative that we make sure that the California Republican Party is not able to use the recall to hijack the state on October 7th.
