I'm surprised that an essay that overlooks such obvious points is getting so much attention.

I read it as an attempt to lay out all alternatives. And, being part of the establishment, they don't want to take away all of their options.

Like you, I believe that there is no chance that South Korea would join us in an attack on North Korea. And without them, an attack is possible, but an invasion is almost undoable. So, it the Chinese don't do something, they face a Nuclear Japan and Taiwan for sure. And South Korea might build a Nuke also.
