<<Terrorism isn't a byproduct of "Israel and oil", terrorism is a byproduct of Arab backwardness and autocracy.>> This is just absurd and supremely arrogant. We need oil -- and there is abundant cheap oil in the middle east. No other single fact of life has done more to shape our strategic interests in the middle east than oil. Israel is a close second -- Israel faces extraordinarily difficult national security interests and if not for the unfailing support of the United States, Israel would most likely not have survived this long. Iraq was a threat to Israel, not the US. And we wanted to get Iraqi oil back into the market -- what a windfall to control the rate of production of the Iraqi oil fields -- bye-bye OPEC. No discussion of the middle east that ignores oil and Israel can be taken seriously.
