Gates doesn't want Apple to go under. He has always been committed to selling apps fot the Mac. There are over 8 million Mac users and repeat sales are over 75%. Why would he give up this lucrative market? His quid pro quo for investing in AAPL non-voting stock is to get MS Explorer bundled into the Mac OS---a very smart move.
He is in the software business with Apple not in the hardware.
