Iraq invaded Kuwait. That was not a threat to US national security -- that was an illegal invasion of a sovereign nation. Sending troops was the right thing to do -- it would have been wrong to allow the aggression to stand. Bush Sr. said it well -- "this will not stand". But it was not in response to a threat to the US. Since then, Iraq was starved and disarmed. The fact that Iraq was completely disarmed came as a shock to many. But there never was a threat to us. Iraq was, at most, a threat to the region -- and the evidence now is that it was not even a threat to the region. Iraq was, however, a threat to Israel. We do face threats to the US -- first and foremost from al Qaida and from North Korea. Our ability to defend ourselves from real threats has been diminished by allowing ourselves to be sidetracked in Iraq.
