Where neo-confederates err here is that they illogically assume that because Lincoln's prime directive was to preserve the Union, the South was not fighting to preserve the right to slavery. Unfortunately for them, they cannot logically appeal to Union motives to prove the motives of the Confederates. This Lincoln quote is often abused by neo-confederates because they fail to understand this simple fact of logic.

In the quote, Lincoln merely described how his drive against slavery was dictated by his primary motive of preserving the Union. Should we read the quote in its historical context, we will readily discern that he was justifying his anti-expansionist posture with regard to slavery. He claims that as President he would have taken another posture were it to have promised the preservation of the union. But he could take no other posture because the South insisted on expanding slavery - the very thing Lincoln thought threatened the Union.

The history is clear - the Confederates attempted to break union, and they fought and died all for states' rights to keep and expand slavery across America.
