| We make choices based on an assessment of what is better, until we think we can go no further. That is true of societies, as well. Some things, of course, require no general solution, but pertain to the individual in his or her particular situation. Not only that, but it takes all kinds to make a world. If everyone were like me, we would have no farms, for example, and would all starve. But some things are more or less generalizable. For example, it is better to be healthy, literate, and socially skilled than sick, illiterate, and socially inept. A good society tries to raise children who are healthy, have a basic education, and are reasonable well- socialized. |
