"For example, it is better to be healthy, literate, and socially skilled than sick, illiterate, and socially inept. A good society tries to raise children who are healthy, have a basic education, and are reasonable well- socialized.

It helps to have standards that contribute to a regeneration of society in a positive direction. Of course there should always be allowances for exceptions to standards...without promoting the exceptions to a level that causes a deterioration of standards.
