Well yeah. You see the Republican Party was really quite new at the time. You had some Whigish fokes, but they were pretty much in the North too. The Dem Party reigned in the South and this reign continued right up until White Southerners began a shift to the Republican Party in modern times. Much to my chagrin, a lot of this shift happened because the Republican Party began to appeal to southern racists. This is not to say that Republicans are racists, but that anti-black racial politics certainly helped the party (much as anti-black racial politics helps Democrats today)...
