July 10: The image doctor is in Dean keeps family out of picture in candidate spread for Esquire burlingtonfreepress.com

Wives and children and grandchildren playfully pose with presidential hopefuls in an Esquire magazine photo spread of Democrats who are seeking the 2004 nomination. Except in the photograph of former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, in which family members are noticeably absent. Dean appears in the August issue not with his physician wife and two children, but with campaign workers at his South Burlington headquarters. Dean kept his family out of the picture during his 11 years as Vermont's chief executive. He did the same in the feature titled, ''Democrats In Their Natural Habitats.'' The magazine arrived Wednesday on newsstands. Photographer Michael Edwards writes that Dean was ''adamant about not including his family in the portrait. This was not negotiable.'' Edwards reports that he decided to photograph the former governor with his ''surrogate family.''
This fit the image the campaign seeks to convey, said campaign spokeswoman Courtney O'Donnell. "The governor felt strongly that this campaign is not just about Howard Dean, but it's about bringing people into the process of government,'' O'Donnell said, ''and the notion of it being a people-powered Howard campaign.'' Vermonters might recognize a subtle nod to his family in the necktie that Dean is wearing: It shows hockey players skating in a packed rink. Both of Dean's children, Anne and Paul, have skated for Burlington High School.
"In terms of his children, the governor speaks frequently that his children are very independent and they do not want to be involved and be in the public eye,'' O'Donnell said. ''He was respecting that.'' O'Donnell said Dean's wife, Judith Steinberg, will become more involved in the campaign and appear at public events in ''due time.'' "They both realize that and welcome that,'' she said.
Meanwhile, Steinberg's counterparts are playing along. Among the Esquire photographs: John Kerry's wife, Teresa, holds a teacup and shares a chair with her husband in the couple's art-filled Washington home; while Rev. Al Sharpton's wife, Kathy, sips a drink and eats catfish at Sylvia's, a soul food restaurant in Harlem.
