China slams Japan over WWII chemical weapon

Beijing, Aug. 9. (PTI): China has urged Japan to seriously deal with an accident in which a World War II Japanese chemical weapon left in northeast China's Heilongjiang province poisoned 29 people, the state media reported today.

Concerned by the accident, Director General of the Asia Department of Chinese Foreign Ministry, Fu Ying summoned a minister of the Japanese Embassy in China yesterday and lodged solemn representations, China Daily reported.

Fu said the use of chemical and biological weapons was a severe crime of Japanese invaders during the second world war and the deserted Japanese chemical weapons seriously had injured Chinese civilians for many times after the war.

She urged the Japanese government to tackle the issue seriously and shoulder relevant responsibility and obligation for the Chinese losses.

China has helped destroy these left Japanese chemical weapons, hoping that Japan can speed up the progress and resolve the problem thoroughly at an early date, she said.

China Daily reported that 29 people were poisoned in Qiqihaer in Heilongjiang province have been hospitalised after coming into contact with poisonous gas emitted from five metal canisters left behind by Japanese troops during World War II.

The accident occurred on August 4 when a local construction company found the canisters while excavating at a building site.

Four canisters were sold to a peddler who later cut them open at a waste disposal station in a nearby residential area.
