Chinese couples shun sex: report
August 9, 2003

A new survey from People's University in Beijing shows that 28.7 per cent of couples have intercourse less than once a month, the China Newsweek magazine said.

For 6.2 per cent of the couples in the survey, there had been no sex over the past year, the magazine said.

It provided comparative data from abroad, citing surveys showing American couples in their 20s have sex three or four times a week on average, falling to once a week when they reach their 50s.

The magazine, which did not say how many people participated in the survey, reported that 11.3 per cent of the male respondents under the age of 40 had seen prostitutes, while for older males the figure was 6.4 per cent.
