In China, industry sweats it out REUTERS[ THURSDAY, AUGUST 07, 2003 03:06:20 AM ] SHANGHAI: China, still smarting from the economically draining SARS outbreak, faces a fresh threat: searing heat sparking the worst power crunch in years along its prosperous coast, analysts and executives said on Wednesday. While locals trot out their skimpiest outfits and arm themselves with fans, factories at manufacturing hubs such as Shanghai are trimming or shuffling output, which analysts say is hitting industrial production. German auto giant Volkswagen brought down their production lines Friday, Polaroid has begun shutting Monday and Tuesday, and other factories in east China are running skeleton crews. Much of China is stewing under abnormally high temperatures.
